The tradition, confirmed by the archaeology data, tells that
the name of the city of Albano drifts from the one of Albalonga. Probably
it is just in this place thought sacred from the Roman people, between the
Appia way and the near lake (Albano Lake), where the mythical Albalonga
was. Rightly the city can have a credit of the title of "mother of
Rome", in the municipal coat of arms you can see the icon sacred to
the Latins and Alba "the white sow with the thirty cubs", that
in the Virgilio’s Eneide it appeared to Enea to indicate the place
where he would have finished his long travel and contribute with its people,
to the future largeness of Rome. Has been site of villas of emperors and
of maximum personages of the ancient Rome; Settimio Severo constructed in
the III sec. a.C. the imposing encampment of the Partica Legion: faithful
troops with the task to supervise on the near City (Rome). In the ' 700
and in the ' 800 became obliged destination of poets, men of letters, historians
and painters who came to paint the attractions of the roman countryside
and its inhabitants. In 1867 it endured a cholera epidemic of which it remains
as memory the "Cemetery of the cholera or pest". Between the monuments
to visit we suggest the Archaeological Museum, the
catacomb of S.Senatore, the Cisternoni (big tank),
the Grave of the Orazi and Curiazi, the roman Villa
“ai cavallacci", the remains of the Pompeo’s
Villa, the church of "Rotonda" and S.
Maria della Stella (Star’s Maria), the amphitheatre,
the Romanesque church of S.Pietro,
the sanctuary of S.Gaspare of the Buffalo, the Cappuccini
Monastery.
