Built on extinct volcano, Colonna is a town of ancient origins
dated to the Bronze Age, according to several historical founds. In "The
life of Caracalla", Colonna is pointed for the production of vintage
grapes and the wine labicanum, and for its nice position, that is the reason
why since the ancient Roman’s time Colonna has been chose as residence.
In fact ruins of villas and residences of the past are buried under the
grapes or are preserved in some of the open Museums in Colonna. The town
is also known for the great water tank that dominates it, known as “er
dindarolo” and visible also from the highway that connects Rome to
Naples.
The importance of the rural economy (we suggest a visit to the Museum oJ
Farmer Arts) goes together with military one, gained through the centuries
and due to the position oJ Colonna; strategically built up on a volcano,
it has a large view on Via Casilina, important way to Rome especially for
those coming from the Apennine and from the neighbourly cities (such as
Palestrina, Gallicano and Zagarolo).
During the dominations of Rospigliosi Pallavicini was built the present
Parish Church of Saint Nicola from Bari, which hosts the
paintings of Dulio Cambellotti. In 1816, according to what
commisioneed by the Pope Pio VII, Colonna, as many others
feuds, became a free city, even if it remained property of Prince Pallavicini.
Colonna became a real free city only on 12 December 1849, when Pallavicini
family renounced to its baronial rights. Local specialities: wine and pincinelle
(typical homemade pasta), grapes, peaches, kiwi.
Altitudine 343mt, Km 17 From Rome.
