Small agricultural centre built on the ruins of a big imperial
villa, Frascati gained a large importance in 1191 when the inhabitants of
the destroyed Tusculum chose this territory as shelter. It was settled in
different times by Colonna, Borgia and Farnese, when in XVI century it became
estate of the Church and then started to be enriched with valuable architectural
works. 1nfact, that was the beginning of the creation of late-renaissance
and baroque sumptuous villas. We remind among them: Villa Aldobrandini
(or Belvedere), built by Giacomo Aldobrandini, nephew of Pope Clemente
VII, with a wonderful park terrace, statues, caves, and water games
surrounded by holm-oak woods; Villa Lancellotti (or Piccolomini)
with a park and a nice water-lily; Villa Falconieri, enlarged by Borromini;
Villa Torlonia, with a huge and wonderful park, enriched
with fountains and some water game by Maderno. Other monuments are San
Peter Cathedral, with the façade by Gerolamo Fontana,
the three archways fountain by Fontana as well, the “Chiesa
del Gesù” attributed to Pietro da Cortona, and La
Rocca with two four-sided towers and one cylindrical; and Saint
Rocco Church and Saint Sebastian Church. We suggest a visit to
the Museum Tuscolano "Scuderia Aldobrandini".
Local specialities are wines, ring-shape cakes with wine, porchetta (roast
sucking pig) are provided by the typical cellars “Fraschette”.
