The current territory of Grottaferrata belonged anciently
to the city of Tuscolo, mythical Latium city, of which follows the changing
fortunes between history and legend. Large archaeological sites attest to
us the presence of primitive houses that began to the Age of the Iron and
lasted until all XI century b.C. Destroyed by the Roman in the 1191 the
city of Tuscolo, Grottaferrata links its history to the one of its
Abbey (S.Nilo), an impressive construction of year 1000,
an obliged stop of any visitor. Grottaferrata became an independent village
on 1848 with 350 inhabitants, and as many were called from the sour of Fabriano
to work in the old paper mill. A careful observer can notice that the street
tables are not, as usual, in marble or a plastic, but there are floor tiles
with mosaic designs in ceramics, material largely used in the territory
in order to embellish the streets of the village
