Lariano is placed to the slopes of the "Maschio"
(male) or Algidus Mount where on the top rose, at the time of the Roman
Empire, one of the most valid advanced blockhouse to defend Rome and, in
the Middle Ages, a fortified castle with a wide domain in the area. Demetrio,
son of Melosio, rebuilted in X the century, the castle in order to give
a sure shelter to the escapers during the invasion of the Arabs. Beside
the castle, there is a church dedicated to Saint Silvestro and constructed,
probably, on the ancient temple foundations that Roman made to erect in
honour of Giano (Ara Jani). All the territory was administered, on behalf
of the Church, from the Conti of Tuscolo. The poor stability of the papal
government determined continues passages of property and disputes between
Rome and the families of Conti, the Annibaldi and the Colonna. With Pope
Eugene IV, the Orsini, helped by the Savelli and by the Caetani,
they become owner of the entire Maschio of Lariano area,
but the Colonna were defeated only in the 1433 when the Veliterne milizia,
guided by Paul Annibaldi of Molara, destroyed the village and the Rocca.
The Castle and the village inhabitants moved to Velletri, many others occupied
the lower areas giving origin to the current Lariano. By then, Lariano lost
its own independence and, after alternate and complex historical events
until our days, Lariano regained the administrative autonomy from Velletri
on 1967. Such autonomy, determined development and valorisation of the natural
beauties praised by Ovidio, Strabone, Orazio, Tito Livio
and more recently from Carducci. Another testimony of the
remarkable progress of Lariano is the significant demographic increment.
Altitude 355mt, 38Km from Rome.
