The territory of Marine was inhabited from the prehistory
from Latin populations, allocate there approximately 3000 years ago around
the lakes and on the hill of the Albani mountains. Some of the villages
around picked-up the names by the Latin League such as: Bovillae (Frattocchie),
Mugilla (S. Maria delle Mole), and Ferentum (Marine). In the near forests,
close to the spring of the Ferentina nymph, were held the Feriae Latinae,
the 47 cities confederate annual meeting, having as Capital Albalonga. During
the civil war between Mario and Silla, the second one, the winner, imposed
his military presence in the area. In this way, born the Castrimoenium,
the Oppidum or Fortified Town on which it will be developed the current
Marino. After a long period of decadence it begins, between the IX and X
the century, the long feudal history of the city; on the ancient nucleus
is build the Castle of Conti di Tuscolo then passed to
the Orsini and from these to the Colonna, which owned it until 1816. "Fontana
dei Mori" in the public square of at the entrance of the village
testifies the capture and the deportation of slaves by Marcantonio Colonna,
after the victory against the Turkish in Lepanto. The fountain is done with
lava stone, volcanic material, very easy to find here at that time. The
ascent baronial palace is today the Town Hall. One of the
most famous monuments of roman age, is the Mitreo. Hidden inside a private
wine cellar, the Mitreo is one of the most suggestive monument of the village.
The ancient roman cult (the origins came from the Babylonian age) considered
the God Mitra defender of the goodness and protecting the
Empire and they use to revere it with particular sacrificial ceremonies
in the under?????ground temples called Mitrei. The one,
has been discovered in Marino in 1962, is constituted from a land filled
gallery long about 25 meters and wide 3,50 fully plastered of frescos. Another
important site is the Civic Museum
