A small town in the heart of a territory that shows lots historical
monuments, such as the ruins of the ancient city Tuscolo, part oJ old Roman
villas, and a fertile country with ruins of ancient villas as well.
The hill, where was built the town centre, was the ancient seat of a Villa
in Roman times and of a village in the Middle Age. The hill offers a huge
and nice view over Rome and its countryside, from the sea to the Prenestini
hills.
The town centre rises between two important monuments: the Dome of XVII
century and Palazzo Borghese.
Special look deserve the Tuscolo city ruins, Etruscan fortress which according
to the legend was founded by Telegonus, son of U1ysses. The city had a great
development during the Roman Empire and it soon became the Favourite Emperor's
summer resort.
In Monte Porzio Catone countryside we find some beautiful Residence of noble
Roman families, such as Villa Mondragone, which hosted
in 1582 Pope Gregorio XIII who promulgated the calendar
reform;
the Villa has been recently acquired by the Tor Vergata University and it
is now the seat of cultural and scientific meetings and shows. Other important
monuments are: Villa Taverna (or Villa Parisi), the Parco
Borghese and the seventeenth century Villa Lucidi, the
Astronomic Observatory, an important scientific centre
with the Museum of Astronomy, the prestigious Museum of Wine
situated in the characteristic centre of Monte Porzio Catone.
We suggest also a visit to the eighteenth century monastery Eremo
Of CamaIdoli (allowed only to men).
