Nemi has an ancient history strongly related to the homonym lake on which the village reflects, called from the Latins "Mirror of Diana". On the bank lake, in the archaic age, was build the temple of Diana that become point of gathering for the pre-roman people whom made here the "summit" to discuss about foreign politics (Rome pressed to the borders!). When the Roman carried away the Latin League, the temple assumed a pure religious character and the forest became sacred forest to the divinity ("Nemus” from which the current Nemi). The real village was born in the X century with the Castle construction, today Ruspoli Palace, by the Conti of Tuscolo. Granted from the Pope to the Cistercensi monks, them transformed it in a kind of sober community to the standard of "ora et labora" (prey and work). From the half of 400 Nemi passed from one to another family of the roman noble units. In modern age it was embellished of paintings and restructured. The village became famous all over the world on 1930 with the find of the roman ships deep in the lake belonged to the emperor Caligola, used for religious purposes. By the colossal work of partial draining of the lake, have been found many decorative parts of the ships, mosaics and objects in metal kept in the Museum of the ships of Nemi.. Recent digging campaigns are bringing back to the light, on the southern slopes of the crater, the ruins of the "Villa di Cesare", which together with the rests of the Diana temple and to the emissary, makes these lake banks an interesting site from the archaeological historical point of view.
