Built on a volcano rock, Rocca di Papa was a holy place for
the Romans. It is seat above 900 meters sea-level and it is quite close
and visible from Rome. About five centuries before Castel Gandolfo became
the summer residence of the Pope, Eugenio III spent some
time in one of the highest castle of the region, giving the name Rocca di
Papa to the place. Very important is the characteristic medieval neighbourhood,
built by Ludovico il Bavaro in 1328, in which centre we find the small Church
of Crocifisso and the small city square with a fountain known as
the Fountain of the Old Square.
Piazza della Repubblica is the town heart with the old cable railway on
one side; the " Dome or Church of Assunta, originaIly built in 1664
and rebuilt later after the earthquake in 1806, preserves some precious
paintings.
I Other important monuments are also: the Fortress with the Geodetic
Observatory;
Hannibal's Field with Pantanello Spring; Faete Mountain, the Prato
Fabio with Via Sacra and Calvo Mountain, that rises sheer from
Albano Lake and on which slopes rise the Convent of Palazzolo,
built on ancient Roman ruins and villas. LocaI specialities:
