Rocca Priora is the highest village of the Roman Castles.
Its origin is remote, as came out from the numerous archaeological finds
discovered on the place. It seems that the village occupies the area of
the ancient city of Corbio that was long time object of contend between
Equi and Roman. The village was completely destroyed from Roman Consul Orazio
Pulvillo. Just at the beginning of the Middle Ages the village born and
develops itself becoming at the end of century XI, a Castrum, called Arx
Perjuria, subordinate to the Conti of Tuscolo possessions. The site then
passed from the Annibaldi to the Savelli that were who ordered the restructuring
of baronial palace, who have built the church of the Assunta
and of fortification walls. The ancient castle, restructured
in 1800 on the remains of the original one, today is the town hall. Is likely
unknown that Rocca Priora in the past centuries was the ice supplier of
the Capital. In fact in the winter in this locality the snowfalls are heavy
and frequent. The snow were crammed and compressed in large wells that,
opportunely covered with hay, constituted for all the summery season precious
tanks of ice, source of yield for the inhabitants that use to transport
it with carts to Rome and sold it to the reach families. In that area a
Sanctuary in honor of the” Madonna della
Neve” (Madonna of the Snow) was constructed by the Savelli,
devoted of that Madonna.
Altitude 768mt, 31Km from Rome.
