Velletri is between chesnut trees and wide vineyards on the
stratums of the Artemisio Mount. Great and popolar center, with ancient
traditions and millenarian history, is famous for the wine cellars and delightful
wines. By the time of times, from the legend, the oracle proclaimed: "a
veliterno (from velletri) citizen will take possession of the world".
And it seems that the prophecy came true: in fact volsca Velester, after
a long fought against Rome and after to have been submitted in the 338 to
b.C. by Furio Camillo, became faithful to the Urbe (Roma) and gave the one’s
birth to the Gens Octavia from which the emperor Ottaviano Augusto descended.
The site, at the end of VI century, were placed under the jurisdiction of
the Ducato of Rome, and on XII century became autonomous, how proofs its
coat of arms motto “Est mihi libertas papalis et imperialis”.
For many centuries it was a Church feud, from the V century Episcopal Center
and principal town of the marine Province. In the surroundings there are
numerous roman villas. From Velletri come a statue of Atena, today in the
Louvre, and an Asian sarcophagus of Asian type with the works of Ercole
(in the Museum Comunale of Velletri). The Cathedral, going
back to the IV century, has been several times transformed until the last
on XVIII century, which has inside quite a few works of art, like the cosmatesco
tabernacle (XIII century). In the center of the village there is the characteristic
romanesque-gothic Trivio Tower(1353), with white and balck strips,
while the imposing town hall, of G. Della Porta (1573-90),
has been reconstructed after the last war destructions, inside it there
is the Comunale Museum , with considerable archaeological material. To notice, also the Neapolitan Door of
1500 and the Diocesano Museum in the Cathedral
of S.Clemente, which holds works of extraordinary beauty.
